Snugpak is the name of the best selling UK made synthetic sleeping bags in Europe.

Now these super light, high-performance, but exceptionally warm bags are also available in Australia from major lightweight camping shops.

Pack small-Travel light-Sleep warm

From a choice of fifteen models is the SNUGPAK “Merlin Softie 3” weighing approx 750g and compresses to the size of a football, yet can keep you warm down to an extreme of zero degrees. So important for travellers who need to pack light and small. The secret is the unique "Softie" filling developed in Switzerland that is exclusive to Snugpak. It feels and looks like down but, unlike down bags, can be washed and has the ability to keep you warm even when wet. A black, heat absorbing rip-stop Paratex ground outer liner, that feels like parachute silk, called ‘Rapidry’, enables a wet bag to dry in minutes when exposed to warm sunlight.

Profiling Construction

This unique “Softie” filling provides around 30% higher loft, retains its shape and because it is ‘profiled’ does not need to be quilted to the linings as in other bags. Quilting or stitching creates cold spots along stitching lines.

Other bags that look to be ‘not quilted’ simply have a sewn-on loose outer on a quilted back for cosmetic effect!

‘ReflectaTherm’ barrier

Within the filling of the SNUGPAK ‘Merlin Softie 3’ and ‘Black-on-Black’ bags is a unique and breathable, metalised surface, space-exploration material called ‘ReflectaTherm’. This reflects 15% of body heat back into the bag without any significant weight or volume penalty. And it definitely is not an aluminium type foil as used in some cheaper imitations, which only creates sweating in an enclosed bag.

Top Quality Materials

Snugpak bags are lined with the world renowned breathable Pertex outers as used in expensive down filled bags. Most synthetic bags use cheap non-breathable nylon liners that cause sweating and dampness. The zip system used in Snugpak bags is top quality YKK, recognised in the trade as the best available. The shape of Snugpak bags is called “mummy” which ensures a snug fit. In other shaped bags gaps between inside layer and skin actually reduce the bag’s efficiency as air starts to move around in the bag pulling in cool air from the top downwards.

Snugpak Military Sleeping Bags

The Snugpak “Merlin Softie 3” bag manufactured in military Code Green finish as chosen by the British Armed Forces is now available in Australia. There are two models of the ‘Merlin Softie 3’ Code Green bags. Standard drab olive finish or drab olive top with a black heat absorbing ‘Rapidry’ ground liner and a special boot re-inforcement section that allows you to sleep with your boots on. There are some cheap imitations of the genuine "Merlin Softie 3" in Australia, care should be taken to ensure that you are not being sold a Snugnpak imitation by some direct mail Military Surplus Stores.

Temperature Ratings

Snugpak’s temperature ratings are based on a system of comfort and extreme low. Ratings have been arrived at from physical tests from users out in the field consisting of expeditions, adventurers, climbers, general campers and feed back from customers in Europe, North America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Test Reports

However, it is impossible to allow for every eventuality in which a bag may be used and the thermometer reading is far from being the only factor which affects comfort. Age, physical fitness, what food and drink have been consumed all have a bearing on warmth and comfort. So any manufacturer’s ratings can only be taken as a guide.

The new UK designed Snugpak CHRYSALIS range of thermally innovative sleeping bags is now available in Australia.

Sleeping cramped is now a thing of the past. How often have you used a sleeping bag which has restricted your movement when turning or changing sleeping positions? The Snugpak CHRYSALIS sleeping bags swell as you move and turn when sleeping in the bag. It allows you to sleep curled up without feeling cramped. The result is more comfort and less waking when you should be soundly sleeping.

Just like the caterpillar chrysalis, the new Snugpak sleeping bags are made for movement and growth with enough expansion allowing you to even sit cross-legged whilst reading or having a cuppa in the tent.

The secret is in the CHRYSALIS baffle system pioneered by Snugpak, (UK’s biggest manufacturer of sleeping bags). In normal use the bag boasts all the features of a traditional sleeping bag, but the jumbo zip baffle can be opened out to give much more room within the bag.  If the temperature drops you simply zip the bag tighter and instantly boost the thermal performance.

One other unique feature in these ‘growth’ bags is the provision of ‘Kidi Clips’ placed three quarters of the way down enabling the bottom of the bag to be folded down for smaller sleepers like children so they don’t slip down in the bag. This also adds extra warmth to their feet area. And as they later grow in height the same bag will last them into adult life.

Snugpak pioneered the original ‘brand-in-the-hand’ sleeping bags that have recently been copied but not matched for thermal efficiency by many newcomers. No wonder that Snugpak’s ultra light weight and small packing size are chosen by the Armed Forces in  the UK, USA and Australia.

The Snugpak CHRYSALIS sleeping bags feature:

  • breathable Paratex outers and lining that retard moisture getting in and drawing perspiration out, improving performance even when sweating
  • the unique and stable proprietary ‘Softie’ filling WITHOUT the need for quilting, which only cause cold spots and accelerate body heat loss
  • the proven breathable “Reflectatherm’ barrier that reflects body heat back into the bag improving the body’s heat retention by 15%
  • and the added advantage of being able to wash the bag when needed
  • all this in a small-packing, lightweight bag the size of not much more than a football with the ability to keep you warm in most Australian climates
